When I think of what aluminum foil is good for, I sometimes think of my "go-to gift wrap" when I've run out of real wrapping paper. When I think of what plastic wrap is good for, I sometimes think of a book I once read many years ago, which suggested women could wrap their naked bodies inside of it, in an attempt to spice up their sex lives. I also think about some of the articles I've read over the years, which have suggested it can be used for detoxification purposes.

Well, I'm pretty sure the reason I've never used plastic wrap for either one of those purposes, is because of my aversion to the three major toxins contained within plastic wrap, including: low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), as well as diethylhexyl adipate (DEHA). All of these chemicals (with their tongue twisting names) are considered by health researchers to be endocrine disruptors that contribute to breast cancer in women and low sperm counts in men. All trivia aside, I RARELY use either one of these products for food preservation. When I do use them, I'm careful not to let food surfaces come into direct contact with them!

Why To Stop Cooking in Aluminum Foil Studies have shown that heat causes aluminum (a metal) from the foil to leach out into foods in significant amounts. In fact, the higher the temperature, the more leaching occurs. Researchers found dangerously high levels of aluminum in foods after being cooked, reheated, and even cooled on aluminum foil.

What's the reason for concern? Aluminum accumulates in the body tissues and brain tissues. It's one of the reasons why osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and autism, are becoming epidemics in our culture!

Qwik Tips:

* Never use aluminum pots to cook in. Use tempered glass pans or ceramic coated eco-friendly pans.

* Replace foil with wax paper if you need to store hot food.

* Avoid storing tomatoes, citrus fruits, or spices in foil. (Acid reacts with metals.)
